What the job involves

Java Developers in Indian IT services build and maintain enterprise applications for clients across domains like banking, insurance, and retail. Day to day work includes writing Java code, fixing bugs, integrating with databases and APIs, and supporting testing and deployment under a project manager. Freshers usually start with training on the company's stack, then move to billable project work in agile teams.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface in Java, and when would you use each?

Cover that abstract classes can have state and constructors while interfaces define contracts, and mention Java 8 default methods. Give a practical example like an abstract base service versus a repository interface.

  2. 2

Explain the Java collections framework. How would you choose between ArrayList, LinkedList, and HashMap for a project?

Mention performance trade-offs: ArrayList for fast random access, LinkedList for frequent insertions, HashMap for key-value lookups. Relate it to a real use case like storing user records or a cache.

  3. 3

What is the difference between checked and unchecked exceptions? How do you handle them in a Spring Boot application?

Define both, give examples like IOException versus NullPointerException, and mention try-catch, throws, and global exception handlers with @ControllerAdvice in Spring Boot.

  4. 4

Write a Java program to reverse a string without using built-in reverse methods.

Show a loop or StringBuilder approach, explain time complexity, and handle edge cases like null or empty input. Mention that StringBuilder is preferred over String concatenation in loops.

Practical Scenarios and Project Work

  1. 5

You are asked to add a new REST endpoint to an existing Spring Boot service. What steps would you follow?

Outline defining the controller, service, and repository layers, adding validation, writing unit tests, and updating API documentation. Mention following existing project conventions and using Git branches.

  2. 6

A client reports that a Java application is running slowly during peak hours. How would you investigate and fix it?

Talk about checking logs, profiling with tools like JVisualVM, reviewing database queries and indexes, and checking thread contention. Suggest short-term fixes like caching and long-term fixes like query optimization.

  3. 7

How would you write a SQL query to find the second highest salary from an Employee table, and how would you call it from Java?

Show a subquery or LIMIT/OFFSET approach, then explain using JDBC PreparedStatement or Spring Data JPA. Mention handling SQL exceptions and closing resources.

  4. 8

Your code passes in your local environment but fails in the testing environment. What do you check first?

Cover environment differences: configuration files, database connections, Java versions, and dependency versions. Mention checking logs, using the same build tool, and communicating with the DevOps or testing team.

Behavioural and Teamwork

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to complete a college project. What was your role?

Use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result. Highlight your specific contribution, how you handled disagreements, and what you learned about collaboration.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project or assignment.

Show self-learning through documentation, online courses, or peers, and mention how you applied it. Emphasize time management and asking for help when needed.

  3. 11

How do you handle feedback or criticism on your code from a senior developer?

Show openness, focus on learning, and mention code reviews as a positive practice. Give an example of improving code quality after feedback.

  4. 12

Tell me about a time you missed a deadline or made a mistake. How did you handle it?

Be honest, take responsibility, and explain the corrective action and what you changed afterward. Avoid blaming others and show growth.

HR and Company Fit

  1. 13

Why do you want to join the IT services sector, and why this role as a Java Developer?

Connect your Java skills and interest in building enterprise solutions to the sector's client-focused work. Mention exposure to different domains and structured training.

  2. 14

Are you willing to relocate to any city in India or work in different shifts based on project needs?

Answer clearly and positively if you are flexible. Mention that you understand IT services projects may require relocation or shift adjustments and you are open to it.

  3. 15

Where do you see yourself in three years as a Java Developer?

Show a realistic path: gaining strong hands-on experience, learning frameworks like Spring Cloud or microservices, and possibly leading a small module. Avoid saying you want to leave the company soon.

  4. 16

Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about training programs, project allocation, or the tech stack used. Avoid asking only about salary or leave policy in the first HR round.

Coding round

Java Developer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Java Developer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Accenture India or any other company has asked.
