What the job involves

As a Frontend Engineer at a fast-growing global SaaS company, you will build and maintain user interfaces for web applications used by customers worldwide. Day to day, you will work with designers and backend engineers to turn product requirements into responsive, accessible, and performant features using modern JavaScript frameworks. You will also debug issues, write tests, and participate in code reviews to ensure high-quality code.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between let, const, and var in JavaScript.

Cover scoping rules (block vs function scope), hoisting, and reassignment. Mention that const prevents reassignment but not mutation of objects.

  2. 2

How does the virtual DOM work in React, and why is it useful?

Explain that React creates a lightweight copy of the real DOM, diffs it on state changes, and updates only the necessary parts, improving performance.

  3. 3

What are some ways to optimize the performance of a React application?

Discuss code splitting, lazy loading, memoization (React.memo, useMemo, useCallback), avoiding unnecessary re-renders, and using production builds.

  4. 4

How do you ensure a web application is accessible to users with disabilities?

Mention semantic HTML, ARIA roles, keyboard navigation, color contrast, and testing with screen readers. Show awareness of WCAG guidelines.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

You need to fetch data from an API and display it in a list. How would you handle loading and error states?

Describe using useState and useEffect, showing a loading spinner while fetching, and an error message if the request fails. Mention async/await and try/catch.

  2. 6

A component is re-rendering too often and causing performance issues. How would you debug and fix it?

Talk about using React DevTools Profiler, checking for unnecessary state updates, using React.memo, and ensuring dependencies in useEffect are correct.

  3. 7

How would you make a web page responsive for mobile, tablet, and desktop?

Explain using CSS media queries, flexible grids, relative units (%, rem, vw), and testing on different screen sizes. Mention mobile-first approach.

  4. 8

You need to implement a feature that requires state to be shared across multiple components. What approach would you take?

Discuss lifting state up, using Context API for simpler cases, or a state management library like Redux for complex apps. Explain trade-offs.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked on a team project. What was your role and how did you handle conflicts?

Use STAR method. Highlight collaboration, communication, and how you resolved disagreements constructively.

  2. 10

Why do you want to work as a Frontend Engineer at a fast-growing global tech company?

Show passion for building user-centric products, interest in working with modern technologies, and eagerness to learn in a dynamic environment.

  3. 11

Describe a challenging technical problem you faced and how you solved it.

Pick a specific project, explain the problem, your approach, and the outcome. Emphasize persistence and learning.

  4. 12

How do you stay updated with the latest frontend technologies and best practices?

Mention following blogs, documentation, online courses, open-source contributions, or side projects. Show genuine curiosity.

Coding and Problem Solving

  1. 13

Write a function that reverses a string without using built-in reverse methods.

Use a loop or recursion. Explain time and space complexity. Ensure edge cases like empty string or non-string input are handled.

  2. 14

Given an array of numbers, return a new array with only even numbers, then double them.

Use filter and map. Discuss immutability and chaining array methods. Mention alternative approaches like reduce.

  3. 15

Implement a simple debounce function in JavaScript.

Explain the concept of delaying a function call until after a specified time has passed since the last call. Use setTimeout and clearTimeout.

  4. 16

How would you find the first non-repeating character in a string?

Use a hash map to count occurrences, then iterate to find the first character with count 1. Discuss time and space complexity.

Coding round

Frontend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Frontend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions ActiveCampaign India or any other company has asked.
