What the job involves

A Test Engineer in Indian IT services spends the day designing and executing test cases, logging defects, and verifying fixes for client applications. You work closely with developers and business analysts, often on Agile teams, to ensure software meets requirements before release. The role is entry-level friendly and builds a strong foundation in manual and automation testing.

Role and technical knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between verification and validation in software testing?

Explain verification as static checks (reviews, walkthroughs) and validation as dynamic execution (testing). Give a simple example like checking a requirements document versus running a test case.

  2. 2

Explain the defect life cycle with the states a bug goes through.

Cover New, Assigned, Open, Fixed, Retest, Verified, Closed, and Reopened. Mention who moves the defect at each stage and why Rejected or Deferred may occur.

  3. 3

What are severity and priority? Give an example where severity is high but priority is low.

Define severity as impact on functionality and priority as urgency to fix. Use an example like a crash on a rarely used legacy screen: high severity, low priority.

  4. 4

What is the difference between smoke testing and sanity testing?

Smoke testing checks critical functionalities on a new build to decide if further testing is possible. Sanity testing is a narrow, deep check on a specific fix or feature after a minor change.

Practical scenarios

  1. 5

You find a defect, but the developer says it is not reproducible. How do you handle it?

Show that you document exact steps, environment, test data, screenshots, and logs. Offer to reproduce together, check for environment differences, and update the defect with evidence.

  2. 6

You have limited time to test a release. How do you decide what to test first?

Prioritise based on business criticality, recent code changes, and risk. Mention using a smoke test first, then high-priority test cases, and communicating residual risks to the lead.

  3. 7

How would you test a login page for an Indian banking application?

Cover valid and invalid credentials, SQL injection, password masking, session timeout, captcha, account lockout, and accessibility. Also mention security and performance basics like response time.

  4. 8

What do you check in a test case review before execution?

Check that test cases map to requirements, have clear preconditions, steps, expected results, and test data. Also verify coverage of positive, negative, and boundary conditions.

Automation and tools basics

  1. 9

What are the advantages of automation testing over manual testing?

Highlight repeatability, speed, coverage, and reuse for regression. Also note that automation is not a replacement for exploratory or usability testing.

  2. 10

Write a simple SQL query to find duplicate records in a table.

Use SELECT column, COUNT(*) FROM table GROUP BY column HAVING COUNT(*) > 1. Explain that this helps validate data integrity after backend changes.

  3. 11

How do you use Postman to test a REST API?

Describe creating a request with method, URL, headers, and body. Then check status codes, response body, and add assertions in the Tests tab for validation.

  4. 12

What is the difference between findElement and findElements in Selenium?

findElement returns a single WebElement and throws NoSuchElementException if not found. findElements returns a list, which is empty if no match, useful for checking presence without exceptions.

Behavioural and HR questions

  1. 13

Tell me about a time you found a mistake in your own work. How did you handle it?

Use a STAR format. Show ownership, quick correction, and what you changed in your process to avoid repeating it, such as adding a checklist.

  2. 14

Why do you want to work as a Test Engineer in an IT services company?

Connect your interest in quality, attention to detail, and learning automation. Mention exposure to different client domains and structured training as motivators.

  3. 15

Are you comfortable with relocation, client shifts, or working on support projects?

Answer honestly but show flexibility. If you have constraints, state them politely and emphasise your willingness to adapt for project needs.

  4. 16

Where do you see yourself in three years as a Test Engineer?

Show a path from manual testing to automation or test lead responsibilities. Mention gaining certifications, domain knowledge, and contributing to test strategy.

Coding round

Test Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Test Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Atos India or any other company has asked.
