What the job involves

A Systems Engineer in Indian IT services supports client infrastructure, installs and configures servers and networks, monitors system health, and resolves escalated technical issues. Day to day, you might handle Windows or Linux administration, basic networking, cloud operations, and ticket-based troubleshooting for enterprise customers. Freshers often start in a shared services or managed services team, learning on the job while following ITIL processes.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between a process and a thread in an operating system?

Explain that a process is an independent program with its own memory space, while a thread is a lighter unit within a process sharing memory. Give an example like a browser having multiple tabs as threads.

  2. 2

Explain the OSI model layers and which layer a router or switch works on.

List the seven layers briefly and mention that switches work at Layer 2 (Data Link) and routers at Layer 3 (Network). Show that you understand encapsulation.

  3. 3

What is Active Directory and what are its main components?

Cover domains, trees, forests, organizational units, and the role of domain controllers. Mention common tasks like user creation and group policy.

  4. 4

How would you check if a server is reachable and what basic network commands would you use?

Mention ping, tracert or traceroute, ipconfig or ifconfig, and nslookup. Explain what each command tells you about connectivity or DNS resolution.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

A user reports that they cannot access a shared drive. How would you troubleshoot this step by step?

Start with checking network connectivity, then verify permissions, map the drive manually, and check if the server service is running. Show a logical, layered approach.

  2. 6

You get a ticket that a website is slow for all users in one office. What do you check first?

Check if the issue is local or global, test from another network, verify DNS, and look at bandwidth or firewall logs. Mention using tools like ping and tracert to isolate the problem.

  3. 7

How would you reset a user password in Active Directory and ensure the change is secure?

Describe opening ADUC, finding the user, resetting the password, and forcing a change at next logon. Mention following security policy and not sharing passwords over email.

  4. 8

You need to automate a daily backup check on a Windows server. What script would you write?

Outline a PowerShell script that checks backup logs or service status and sends an email alert. Keep it simple and mention error handling.

Behavioural and Situational

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical issue to someone who was not technical.

Use the STAR method. Focus on simplifying without jargon, checking understanding, and being patient. Highlight the positive outcome.

  2. 10

How do you handle a situation where a client is angry about a recurring issue?

Show empathy, take ownership, and communicate clearly about next steps. Mention escalating if needed and following up until resolved.

  3. 11

Describe a time you worked in a team to complete a project under a tight deadline.

Emphasize your specific role, how you coordinated, and what you learned about time management and communication.

  4. 12

What would you do if you were assigned a task you did not know how to complete?

Say you would research first, then ask a senior for guidance if stuck, and document the solution. Show willingness to learn and not hide problems.

HR and Company Fit

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a Systems Engineer in an IT services company?

Connect your interest in infrastructure and troubleshooting to the variety of client environments. Mention learning opportunities and exposure to different technologies.

  2. 14

Are you comfortable working in rotational shifts and relocating to any client location?

Be honest but positive. If you are flexible, state it clearly. If not, explain your constraints professionally without sounding rigid.

  3. 15

Where do you see yourself in three years?

Show a realistic path like gaining certifications, becoming a subject matter expert, or moving into a specialized role. Avoid saying you want to leave services soon.

  4. 16

What do you know about our company and why should we hire you?

Research the company's services and clients. Highlight your technical basics, willingness to learn, and fit for a fast-growing environment. Keep it concise and confident.
