What the job involves

A GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) engineer designs algorithms and software that determine a spacecraft's position and orientation, plan its path, and command actuators to follow that path. In a fast-growing space and defence tech company, you might work on attitude determination for small satellites, trajectory optimization for launch vehicles, or control laws for reaction wheels and thrusters. Day to day involves MATLAB/Simulink modelling, C++ implementation, simulation testing, and hardware-in-the-loop validation.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between guidance, navigation, and control in a spacecraft context.

Guidance computes the desired path or attitude, navigation estimates the current state from sensors, and control computes actuator commands to reduce the error between desired and estimated states.

  2. 2

How would you represent a spacecraft's attitude, and why might you choose quaternions over Euler angles?

Quaternions avoid gimbal lock, are numerically stable for large rotations, and require only four parameters with a normalization constraint. Euler angles are intuitive but suffer singularities.

  3. 3

What is a Kalman filter and how is it used in spacecraft navigation?

It recursively estimates the state from noisy sensor measurements and a dynamic model. In navigation, it fuses star tracker, IMU, and GPS data to provide a best estimate of attitude and position.

  4. 4

Describe how you would design a PID controller for a reaction wheel to point a satellite.

Start with a linearized model, tune proportional gain for response speed, add integral to eliminate steady-state error, and derivative to damp oscillations. Validate in simulation with disturbances like gravity gradient and solar radiation pressure.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

During a simulation, your spacecraft's attitude diverges after a sensor update. How would you debug this?

Check sensor fusion logic for incorrect covariance matrices, verify reference frame transformations, and test the filter with known inputs. Isolate whether the issue is in the model, the estimator, or the controller.

  2. 6

You need to size reaction wheels for a 6U CubeSat. What factors do you consider?

Consider maximum torque for slew maneuvers, momentum storage for disturbance rejection, power consumption, and mass. Use worst-case disturbance torques from gravity gradient, aerodynamic drag, and solar pressure.

  3. 7

How would you validate your GNC algorithms before a flight?

Use model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Run Monte Carlo campaigns with parameter variations to check robustness. Compare against analytical benchmarks where possible.

  4. 8

Your thruster has a minimum impulse bit that is too large for fine pointing. What can you do?

Consider using a pulse-width modulation scheme to approximate smaller impulses, or switch to a different actuator like reaction wheels for fine pointing and use thrusters only for large maneuvers.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Why do you want to work in the space and defence sector, and specifically at a smaller or fast-growing company?

Show passion for space technology, mention the opportunity to work on diverse problems, and highlight the impact of contributing to a growing team. Avoid generic answers about 'space is cool'.

  2. 10

Describe a project where you had to learn a new tool or concept quickly. How did you manage?

Use a STAR structure: situation, task, action, result. Emphasize self-learning, resourcefulness, and applying the new skill to deliver a working solution.

  3. 11

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to solve a technical problem. What was your role?

Highlight collaboration, communication, and your specific contribution. Mention how you handled disagreements or integrated different ideas.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in three years in this role?

Show ambition to deepen technical expertise, take ownership of GNC subsystems, and contribute to flight missions. Align with the company's growth stage and need for versatile engineers.

Role and Sector Awareness

  1. 13

What are some key differences between GNC for launch vehicles and for satellites?

Launch vehicles focus on trajectory optimization, staging, and aerodynamic forces during ascent. Satellites focus on attitude control, orbit maintenance, and long-duration autonomy with limited power.

  2. 14

How does the space environment affect GNC design?

Consider radiation effects on electronics, thermal vacuum extremes, microgravity, and disturbances like solar pressure. GNC must be robust to these and often use radiation-hardened components.

  3. 15

What is hardware-in-the-loop testing and why is it important for GNC?

HIL connects real flight hardware (e.g., flight computer, sensors) to a simulated environment. It validates timing, interfaces, and real-time performance before flight, reducing risk.

  4. 16

Name a recent Indian space mission and discuss a GNC challenge it might have faced.

For example, Chandrayaan-3's soft landing required precise attitude control and thrusters for descent. Discuss sensor fusion, hazard avoidance, and control during terminal phase.
