What the job involves

Frontend engineers build the user interfaces and client-side logic that let customers interact with data platforms, dashboards, and internal tools. At global tech companies, they work with designers and backend engineers to ship fast, accessible, and reliable web experiences, often for developer-facing products. A fresher in this role spends most days writing and reviewing code, fixing UI bugs, and learning the team's stack and testing practices.

Role and technical knowledge

  1. 1

Explain how the browser renders a page from HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and where you would look to fix a slow first paint.

Cover parsing, DOM and CSSOM construction, render tree, layout, and paint. Mention DevTools performance panel, render-blocking resources, and critical CSS.

  2. 2

What is the difference between the virtual DOM and the real DOM, and why do frameworks like React use it?

Explain that the virtual DOM is a lightweight in-memory representation, and diffing minimizes expensive real DOM updates. A strong answer also notes that it is not always faster than careful manual DOM work.

  3. 3

How do you make a data table with thousands of rows usable in a browser?

Discuss virtualization or windowing, pagination, debounced filtering, and avoiding layout thrashing. Mention libraries or custom hooks that render only visible rows.

  4. 4

What happens when you type a URL in the browser and press Enter, from a frontend perspective?

Cover DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP request, response, parsing, and subresource loading. Keep the focus on what the frontend engineer controls: caching, bundling, and render timing.

Practical coding and scenario questions

  1. 5

Build a searchable dropdown component that fetches suggestions from an API as the user types.

Show debouncing, loading and empty states, keyboard navigation, and cleanup of in-flight requests. Mention accessibility roles like combobox and listbox.

  2. 6

You have a dashboard that shows live metrics. How would you update the UI without blocking the main thread?

Discuss WebSockets or polling, batching updates, requestAnimationFrame, and offloading heavy work to Web Workers. Mention throttling and avoiding unnecessary re-renders.

  3. 7

A user reports that a form loses data when they navigate away and come back. How do you debug and fix this?

Explain reproducing the issue, checking component lifecycle and state management, and using sessionStorage or URL state to persist draft data. Mention cleanup and validation.

  4. 8

Given an array of objects representing query results, write a function to group and sort them for display.

Show clean use of reduce and sort, handling of missing fields, and stable sorting. Discuss immutability and how you would test edge cases.

Behavioural and teamwork questions

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new frontend technology quickly for a project.

Use a specific project example, describe your learning approach, and end with the outcome and what you would do differently.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you disagreed with a teammate about a UI implementation. How did you resolve it?

Focus on listening, comparing trade-offs with data or prototypes, and committing to the team decision. Avoid framing it as a personal win.

  3. 11

How do you handle feedback on your code during review, especially when you have spent a lot of time on it?

Show that you separate your ego from the code, ask clarifying questions, and treat reviews as a learning tool. Mention a concrete improvement you made after feedback.

  4. 12

Give an example of a time you had to prioritize between multiple frontend tasks with tight deadlines.

Explain how you assessed user impact, communicated with stakeholders, and delivered the most important work first. Mention any trade-offs you made.

HR and company-fit questions

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a frontend engineer at a data-focused global tech company?

Connect your interest in developer tools or data interfaces with the company's products. Show that you have used or explored similar tools, without claiming inside knowledge.

  2. 14

How do you keep your frontend skills current, and what have you built or contributed to recently?

Mention specific resources, side projects, open-source contributions, or coursework. Be ready to talk about one recent project in detail.

  3. 15

Where do you see yourself in two to three years as a frontend engineer?

Show a realistic growth path, such as deepening expertise in performance or design systems, and an interest in mentoring or owning larger features.

  4. 16

Are you comfortable working with teams across time zones, and how do you manage communication?

Give examples of asynchronous communication, clear written updates, and respect for different schedules. Mention tools like Slack, GitHub, or issue trackers.

Coding round

Frontend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Frontend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions ClickHouse India or any other company has asked.
