What the job involves

As a Frontend Engineer in e-commerce, retail, or D2C, you will build and maintain customer-facing web interfaces such as product listing pages, product detail pages, cart, checkout, and order tracking. You will work closely with designers, backend engineers, and product managers to ensure fast, responsive, and accessible experiences across devices. Day to day involves writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, integrating APIs, optimising page load speed, and fixing UI bugs reported by QA or users.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

How would you structure the HTML and CSS for a product card that shows an image, title, price, discount badge, and an 'Add to Cart' button, ensuring it works on mobile and desktop?

Mention semantic HTML (article, figure), CSS Grid or Flexbox for layout, media queries for responsiveness, and accessible button labelling.

  2. 2

Explain the difference between client-side and server-side rendering in the context of an e-commerce product listing page. Which would you choose for a sale event and why?

Discuss SEO, initial load time, and dynamic content. For a sale event, client-side rendering with caching may handle high traffic better, but SSR helps with SEO for product pages.

  3. 3

What are the key considerations for making a checkout form accessible and user-friendly for Indian users on low-end smartphones?

Cover large touch targets, minimal input fields, autofill support, clear error messages, and testing on slow networks and small screens.

  4. 4

How would you handle image loading for a product gallery with 20 high-resolution images without slowing down the page?

Mention lazy loading, responsive images with srcset, using WebP format, and a placeholder or blur-up technique.

Practical Scenarios and Problem Solving

  1. 5

A user reports that the 'Apply Coupon' button on the cart page does not work on Safari but works on Chrome. How would you debug and fix this?

Talk about checking browser console for errors, testing event handling, verifying API response, and using feature detection or polyfills for Safari-specific issues.

  2. 6

You need to implement a filter sidebar for a category page with options like size, colour, price range, and brand. How would you manage state and update the product list without a full page reload?

Explain using URL query parameters, JavaScript state management, and fetching filtered results via API. Mention debouncing for price range input.

  3. 7

During a festive sale, the site experiences slow loading due to heavy JavaScript. What steps would you take to improve performance quickly?

Suggest code splitting, deferring non-critical scripts, compressing assets, using a CDN, and enabling browser caching.

  4. 8

How would you ensure that a 'Buy Now' button correctly adds the product to the cart and redirects to checkout, handling cases where the user is not logged in?

Describe checking authentication state, storing cart data in local storage or session, and redirecting to login with a return URL.

Behavioural and Teamwork

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to build a project. What was your role and how did you handle disagreements?

Use STAR method. Highlight communication, compromise, and focus on user impact. Mention any tools like Git or Trello used for collaboration.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project. How did you approach it?

Show self-learning ability, resourcefulness (documentation, tutorials), and applying the learning to deliver results under time constraints.

  3. 11

Give an example of a time you received critical feedback on your code or design. How did you respond?

Demonstrate openness to feedback, willingness to improve, and how you implemented the suggestion to make the product better.

  4. 12

How do you prioritise tasks when you have multiple deadlines, such as fixing a bug, adding a new feature, and attending a team meeting?

Discuss assessing urgency and impact, communicating with stakeholders, and using simple tools like to-do lists or Kanban boards.

HR and Company Fit

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a Frontend Engineer in the e-commerce or retail sector, especially for a company like FabIndia?

Connect personal interest in online shopping, Indian retail, or craft-based brands. Mention the scale and user impact of e-commerce frontends.

  2. 14

Where do you see yourself in the next two years as a frontend developer?

Show ambition to deepen technical skills, take ownership of modules, and contribute to better user experiences. Avoid vague answers like 'manager'.

  3. 15

How do you stay updated with the latest frontend technologies and trends?

Mention blogs, YouTube channels, open-source contributions, or side projects. Relate to e-commerce trends like PWAs or voice search.

  4. 16

What do you know about our company's online presence and how would you improve it as a frontend engineer?

Research the company's website and app. Suggest improvements like faster load times, better mobile navigation, or clearer product filters.
