What the job involves

Machine Learning Engineers at fast-growing AI and deeptech companies build, train, and deploy models that power products such as conversational assistants, recommendation systems, or computer vision tools. Day to day, you will write data pipelines, experiment with architectures, tune hyperparameters, and work with product and infrastructure teams to ship models to production. The role blends research intuition with strong software engineering and a focus on scalable, reliable systems.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between bagging and boosting, and give an example of when you would use each in a production ML system.

A strong answer contrasts variance reduction in bagging (e.g., Random Forest) with bias reduction in boosting (e.g., XGBoost), and links to use cases like fraud detection or ranking where interpretability or speed matters.

  2. 2

How would you handle missing data in a dataset for a model that predicts customer churn? Discuss trade-offs of different imputation methods.

Cover deletion, mean/median/mode imputation, model-based imputation (e.g., KNN), and adding missingness indicators. Mention that dropping rows can bias results and that imputation should be done inside cross-validation to avoid leakage.

  3. 3

What is the attention mechanism in Transformers, and why is it useful for tasks like language modeling?

Explain how attention computes weighted sums of values based on query-key similarity, enabling the model to focus on relevant parts of the input. Highlight parallelization and long-range dependency handling compared to RNNs.

  4. 4

Given a dataset with 99% negative and 1% positive examples, how would you evaluate and improve a classifier?

Discuss why accuracy is misleading, and suggest precision, recall, F1, AUC-ROC, and precision-recall curves. Mention techniques like resampling, class weights, and anomaly detection approaches.

Practical Scenarios and Problem Solving

  1. 5

You are asked to build a model to detect toxic comments in real time for a chat app. Outline your approach from data collection to deployment.

Cover data sourcing and labeling, text preprocessing, model choice (e.g., fine-tuned BERT or lightweight CNN), latency constraints, threshold tuning, and monitoring for drift. Mention ethical considerations and human-in-the-loop review.

  2. 6

Your model performs well on validation but poorly on a new batch of production data. How do you debug and fix this?

Discuss distribution shift, data leakage, feature drift, and logging. Suggest comparing feature distributions, retraining with recent data, and setting up monitoring. Emphasize iterative testing and root-cause analysis.

  3. 7

You need to reduce inference latency of a deep learning model by 50% without losing more than 1% accuracy. What techniques would you try?

Mention quantization, pruning, knowledge distillation, model architecture changes (e.g., MobileNet), and hardware acceleration (GPU, TPU). Explain trade-offs and the need to benchmark on target hardware.

  4. 8

How would you design an experiment to test whether a new recommendation algorithm improves user engagement?

Describe A/B testing setup, defining metrics (CTR, dwell time), randomization, sample size calculation, and guardrail metrics. Mention potential pitfalls like novelty effects and network effects.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new ML framework or tool quickly for a project. How did you approach it?

Use STAR format: describe the situation, the tool (e.g., PyTorch Lightning), your learning strategy (docs, tutorials, small experiments), and the outcome. Show curiosity and self-driven learning.

  2. 10

Describe a project where you had to explain a technical ML concept to a non-technical stakeholder. How did you ensure they understood?

Focus on simplifying without jargon, using analogies, and checking for understanding. Highlight the importance of aligning on business goals and avoiding overpromising model capabilities.

  3. 11

Why do you want to work at a fast-growing AI company like Inflection AI India rather than a larger, more established tech firm?

Show genuine interest in the company's mission, the pace of innovation, and opportunities for broad impact. Avoid generic answers; connect your skills to their specific domain like conversational AI or deeptech.

  4. 12

Give an example of a time you received critical feedback on your ML work. How did you respond?

Demonstrate openness to feedback, a growth mindset, and concrete actions taken to improve. Emphasize how you incorporated the feedback into better model design or code quality.

Coding and Implementation

  1. 13

Write a Python function to compute the F1 score from scratch given true labels and predicted labels.

Show clear handling of edge cases (division by zero), use of confusion matrix components, and efficient vectorized code with NumPy. Explain the formula and why F1 balances precision and recall.

  2. 14

Implement a simple linear regression using gradient descent in NumPy. How would you check if it is converging?

Cover initialization, forward pass, loss computation, gradient calculation, and parameter updates. Mention monitoring loss over iterations, learning rate tuning, and early stopping.

  3. 15

Given a list of user-item interactions, write code to create a train-test split for a recommendation model that avoids data leakage.

Discuss time-based splitting for temporal data or leave-one-out for implicit feedback. Emphasize that random splitting can leak future interactions and inflate performance.

  4. 16

How would you use SQL to find the top 3 most common labels in a table of model predictions? Write the query.

Use GROUP BY, COUNT, ORDER BY DESC, and LIMIT. Explain how this helps in debugging class imbalance or understanding model behavior in production.

Coding round

Machine Learning Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.
