What the job involves

As a backend engineer in neobanking, lending and insurtech, you will build and maintain the server-side systems that power loan origination, credit underwriting, disbursements, repayments, and insurance policy management. Day to day, you will write APIs, work with databases, integrate with payment gateways and credit bureaus, and ensure the platform is secure, scalable, and compliant with financial regulations. You will also debug production issues and collaborate with product, risk, and compliance teams to ship features that directly impact borrowers and policyholders.

Role and Domain Knowledge

  1. 1

Walk me through the lifecycle of a loan from application to disbursement. Where does the backend fit in?

Cover stages like application capture, KYC, credit bureau check, underwriting, approval, disbursement via payment gateway, and repayment scheduling. Highlight backend responsibilities: APIs, data storage, status updates, and third-party integrations.

  2. 2

What is a credit bureau, and how would you integrate a bureau API into a loan origination system?

Explain that credit bureaus (like CIBIL, Experian) provide credit scores and reports. Integration involves secure API calls with borrower consent, parsing response, storing data, and handling errors or timeouts gracefully.

  3. 3

In neobanking, why is idempotency important for payment APIs? How would you implement it?

Idempotency prevents duplicate transactions if a request is retried. Implement using a unique idempotency key stored in a database or cache; check before processing and return the same response for repeated requests.

  4. 4

What are the key differences between building backend for a lending platform versus a traditional e-commerce site?

Focus on regulatory compliance, data security (PII, financial data), audit trails, integration with financial institutions, and the need for high accuracy and consistency in money movement.

Technical Fundamentals

  1. 5

How would you design a database schema for tracking loan repayments, including EMI schedules and payment history?

Propose tables for loans, repayment schedules, and payments. Include fields like loan_id, due_date, amount_due, amount_paid, status. Discuss indexing and relationships.

  2. 6

Explain how you would secure a REST API that handles sensitive customer data like bank account numbers and PAN.

Mention HTTPS, authentication (OAuth, JWT), authorization, input validation, encryption at rest and in transit, and logging without exposing PII.

  3. 7

What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases? Which would you choose for a transaction ledger and why?

SQL offers ACID transactions and strong consistency, ideal for financial ledgers. NoSQL may be used for unstructured data or high-scale reads, but for money movement, SQL is often preferred.

  4. 8

Given a list of transactions, write a function to find the top 3 highest-value transactions for a customer. How would you optimize it for a large dataset?

Discuss using a min-heap of size 3 for O(n) time, or sorting if data is small. For large datasets, mention database queries with ORDER BY and LIMIT, or streaming approaches.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 9

A customer reports that their loan EMI was deducted twice. How would you investigate and resolve this issue?

Check logs and transaction records for duplicate entries, verify idempotency keys, liaise with payment gateway, and initiate a refund if needed. Suggest preventive measures like better idempotency checks.

  2. 10

You need to integrate a new KYC provider that verifies Aadhaar and PAN. What steps would you take from API design to deployment?

Outline requirements, design API endpoints, handle authentication, map data fields, implement error handling, test with sandbox, ensure compliance with data privacy laws, and deploy with monitoring.

  3. 11

During peak loan application hours, your API response times spike. How would you diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks?

Use monitoring tools to identify slow queries or endpoints, check database indexes, consider caching, optimize code, and possibly scale horizontally. Discuss load testing and profiling.

  4. 12

How would you handle a situation where a third-party credit bureau API is down, but loan applications are still coming in?

Implement fallback mechanisms like queuing requests for later, returning a pending status, or using alternate bureaus if available. Communicate clearly to users and ensure data consistency.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 13

Why do you want to work in fintech, specifically in lending or insurtech, rather than a general tech company?

Show genuine interest in financial inclusion, solving real-world problems, and the impact of technology on access to credit. Relate to personal experiences or projects.

  2. 14

Describe a time you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project. How did you approach it?

Use STAR method: situation, task, action, result. Highlight self-learning, resourcefulness, and applying the new skill effectively.

  3. 15

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to solve a complex problem. What was your role?

Focus on collaboration, communication, and your specific contribution. Emphasize how you handled disagreements or challenges.

  4. 16

Where do you see yourself in three years, and how does this role fit into your career goals?

Align your growth with the company's needs, showing ambition to take on more responsibility in backend development, possibly specializing in fintech systems.

Coding round

Backend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Backend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Kinara Capital or any other company has asked.
