What the job involves

As an NLP Engineer at an AI-first startup like Lyzr AI, you will build and fine-tune language models, design retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, and deploy NLP features into production APIs. Day to day work involves data preprocessing, prompt engineering, model evaluation, and collaborating with product teams to ship AI agents. You will also monitor model performance and iterate on latency and accuracy trade-offs.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the self-attention mechanism in transformers and why it is useful for NLP tasks.

Cover how queries, keys, and values are computed, scaled dot-product attention, and how it captures long-range dependencies compared to RNNs.

  2. 2

What is the difference between BERT and GPT architectures in terms of training objective and typical use cases?

Mention masked language modeling vs causal language modeling, bidirectional vs unidirectional context, and when to use each for classification vs generation.

  3. 3

How would you handle out-of-vocabulary words or subword tokenization in a production NLP system?

Discuss Byte-Pair Encoding, WordPiece, or SentencePiece, and how subword tokenization reduces OOV issues and handles morphologically rich languages.

  4. 4

What are some common evaluation metrics for text summarization and machine translation, and what are their limitations?

Mention ROUGE for summarization, BLEU for translation, and note that they correlate poorly with human judgment and do not capture semantic meaning well.

Practical Scenarios and Problem Solving

  1. 5

You need to build a chatbot for a customer support portal that answers questions from a knowledge base. How would you approach it?

Describe a RAG pipeline: document ingestion, chunking, embedding with a model like Sentence-BERT, storing in a vector database, retrieving top-k passages, and generating answers with an LLM. Mention fallback and guardrails.

  2. 6

Your fine-tuned model performs well on validation but poorly in production. What could be the reasons and how would you debug?

Consider data drift, distribution mismatch, overfitting, preprocessing differences, latency constraints, and logging. Suggest monitoring, A/B testing, and retraining.

  3. 7

How would you reduce the inference latency of a large language model for a real-time application?

Discuss quantization, pruning, distillation, using smaller models, caching, batching, and hardware acceleration like GPUs or ONNX runtime.

  4. 8

You have a dataset with imbalanced classes for sentiment analysis. How would you handle it?

Mention techniques like oversampling, undersampling, class weights, focal loss, data augmentation, and using appropriate metrics like F1-score instead of accuracy.

Behavioural and Teamwork

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked on a team project where you had to explain a technical concept to a non-technical teammate.

Use STAR method: describe the situation, how you simplified the concept, and the positive outcome. Show communication and empathy.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you had to learn a new NLP technique or tool quickly for a project.

Highlight self-learning, resourcefulness, and applying the new skill effectively. Mention specific resources like Hugging Face docs or papers.

  3. 11

How do you prioritize tasks when you have multiple deadlines in a fast-paced startup environment?

Discuss using impact vs effort, communicating with stakeholders, and being flexible. Show you can handle ambiguity.

HR and Motivation

  1. 12

Why do you want to work at a fast-growing AI startup like Lyzr AI rather than a large tech company?

Show enthusiasm for building from scratch, wearing multiple hats, and direct impact. Align with the company's mission in AI agents or similar.

  2. 13

Where do you see yourself in three years as an NLP Engineer?

Express a desire to deepen technical expertise, take ownership of projects, and contribute to open-source or research. Avoid vague answers.

  3. 14

What is your expected salary range for this role?

Research typical fresher salaries in Indian AI startups (e.g., 6-12 LPA) and give a range while emphasizing flexibility and learning opportunity.

Coding round

NLP Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for NLP Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Lyzr AI or any other company has asked.
