What the job involves

A game developer in the gaming and creator economy builds and maintains interactive experiences, often for mobile-first platforms with social and live features. Day to day, you will write gameplay code, integrate assets, debug performance issues, and work with designers and backend engineers to ship updates quickly. At fast-growing companies, you may also prototype new mechanics, support creator tools, and optimise for low-end devices common in India.

Role and technical knowledge

  1. 1

What is a game loop and why is it important in game development?

Explain the update-render cycle, fixed timestep vs variable, and how it affects smooth gameplay and physics.

  2. 2

How would you handle collision detection between many objects in a mobile game?

Mention broad-phase techniques like spatial partitioning (grids, quadtrees) and simple bounding volume checks before precise collision.

  3. 3

Explain the difference between local and world space in game engines.

Cover how transforms work, why moving a child object in local space differs from world space, and give an example like a gun attached to a player.

  4. 4

What are some ways to optimise a Unity game for low-end Android devices?

Talk about reducing draw calls, using object pooling, limiting real-time lights, compressing textures, and profiling with the profiler.

Practical scenarios and problem solving

  1. 5

You are building a 2D endless runner. How would you spawn obstacles without causing frame drops?

Describe object pooling, spawning ahead of the player, and recycling objects instead of instantiate and destroy.

  2. 6

A game feature works in the editor but lags on a real phone. How do you debug it?

Mention using the profiler on device, checking for heavy scripts in Update, and testing on a representative low-end device.

  3. 7

How would you implement a simple leaderboard for a casual game?

Cover local storage for offline, then a backend service or cloud save for online, and how to handle cheating simply.

  4. 8

You need to add a new power-up that slows down time for the player. How do you approach it?

Explain changing Time.timeScale, handling UI that should not slow down, and resetting after duration.

Behavioural and teamwork

  1. 9

Tell me about a game or project you built. What was your role and what did you learn?

Focus on your specific contribution, a challenge you faced, and how you improved the game or your skills.

  2. 10

Describe a time you had to learn a new tool or engine quickly for a project.

Show your learning process, resources used, and how you applied it under a deadline.

  3. 11

How do you handle feedback on your game from players or teammates?

Emphasise listening, prioritising based on impact, and iterating without taking it personally.

  4. 12

Why do you want to work in the gaming and creator economy sector?

Connect your passion for games with the idea of empowering creators and reaching a large Indian audience.

HR and company fit

  1. 13

What do you know about our company and the kind of games or creator tools we build?

Research the company's products, target audience, and recent updates. Mention how your skills fit their mobile-first approach.

  2. 14

Where do you see yourself in two years as a game developer?

Show ambition to grow technically, take ownership of features, and contribute to live games with real users.

  3. 15

Are you comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment with changing priorities?

Give an example of adapting to change, and express willingness to learn and wear multiple hats.

  4. 16

What are your salary expectations for this role?

Research typical fresher game developer salaries in India, give a range, and show flexibility based on learning and growth.
