What the job involves

Cloud Engineers in Indian IT services firms design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure for clients, often working with AWS, Azure, or GCP. Day to day, they automate provisioning using Infrastructure as Code, monitor systems, troubleshoot issues, and support migrations. Freshers typically start with certifications and shadow senior engineers on client projects.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between a public, private, and hybrid cloud? Give an example of when a client might choose each.

Define each model and relate to Indian IT clients: public for scalability, private for sensitive data, hybrid for gradual migration. Mention compliance like RBI guidelines for BFSI clients.

  2. 2

Explain the shared responsibility model in cloud security. Who is responsible for what?

State that the cloud provider secures the cloud infrastructure, while the customer secures what they put in the cloud. Give examples like patching guest OS vs physical security.

  3. 3

What are the key components of a VPC in AWS? How would you design a simple two-tier architecture?

Cover subnets (public/private), route tables, internet gateway, NAT gateway, security groups. Describe web servers in public subnet and database in private subnet.

  4. 4

How does auto-scaling work, and what metrics would you use to trigger it?

Explain scaling policies based on CPU, memory, or request count. Mention cooldown periods and the difference between horizontal and vertical scaling.

Practical Scenarios and Troubleshooting

  1. 5

A client reports that their website hosted on EC2 is intermittently slow. How would you troubleshoot?

Check CloudWatch metrics for CPU, network, and disk. Review security groups, load balancer health checks, and application logs. Suggest right-sizing or adding caching.

  2. 6

You need to migrate an on-premises application to the cloud with minimal downtime. What steps would you take?

Outline assessment, choosing a migration strategy (rehost, replatform), using AWS Migration Hub or Azure Migrate, and testing with a pilot. Mention DNS cutover and rollback plan.

  3. 7

How would you use Terraform to provision a repeatable environment for a development team?

Describe writing modules, using variables, storing state remotely, and versioning. Emphasise idempotency and code review before apply.

  4. 8

A developer accidentally deleted an S3 bucket. How could this have been prevented, and how would you recover?

Mention versioning, MFA delete, bucket policies, and lifecycle rules. For recovery, use versioning or backups; if not enabled, explain limitations.

Behavioural and Situational

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project or assignment.

Use STAR format. Highlight self-learning through documentation, online courses, or labs, and how you applied it successfully.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you worked in a team to solve a problem. What was your role?

Focus on collaboration, communication, and conflict resolution. Mention tools like Git for version control or daily stand-ups.

  3. 11

How would you handle a client who is upset about a cloud service outage affecting their application?

Show empathy, acknowledge the issue, explain steps being taken, and provide a timeline. Emphasise clear communication and following escalation matrix.

  4. 12

Give an example of a time you made a mistake in a technical task. How did you fix it?

Be honest about a minor error, like a misconfigured security group. Describe how you detected it, fixed it, and implemented a preventive measure.

HR and Company Fit

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a Cloud Engineer in an IT services company like Perficient India?

Mention exposure to diverse client projects, learning opportunities, and the chance to work with cutting-edge cloud technologies. Align with the company's focus on digital transformation.

  2. 14

Are you willing to relocate or work in different shifts to support global clients?

Be flexible and positive. Mention adaptability and willingness to work in rotational shifts if required for project needs.

  3. 15

Where do you see yourself in three years as a Cloud Engineer?

Show ambition to gain certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect), take on more responsibility, and possibly specialise in a cloud domain like security or DevOps.

  4. 16

What do you know about our company's cloud services and how do you think you can contribute?

Research the company's partnerships (e.g., AWS, Azure) and mention their cloud offerings. Highlight your skills and eagerness to contribute to client success.

Coding round

Cloud Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.
