Renesas India SDET Interview: Rounds, Questions and Preparation
For SDET roles at companies like Renesas India
What the job involves
SDETs at global semiconductor and embedded product companies design, write, and maintain automated test suites for firmware, drivers, and toolchains. They work closely with development and validation teams to catch regressions early, build CI pipelines, and improve test coverage across hardware and software boundaries. Day to day involves coding test harnesses, debugging failures on real boards or simulators, and reporting actionable defects.
Role and Technical Knowledge
- 1
What is the difference between a unit test, an integration test, and a system test in an embedded context?
Explain scope: unit tests check a single function or driver in isolation, integration tests verify interactions between modules or hardware interfaces, and system tests validate the full product behaviour on target hardware.
- 2
How would you test a UART driver for a microcontroller?
Cover loopback tests, baud rate variations, error injection (framing, parity), buffer overflow scenarios, and using a logic analyzer or oscilloscope to verify signal timing.
- 3
What is a test harness and why is it important for firmware testing?
Describe a test harness as code that automates setup, execution, and teardown of tests, enabling repeatable runs on simulators or hardware and integrating with CI.
- 4
Explain how you would use Python to automate testing of a serial protocol.
Mention pySerial or similar libraries, sending commands and parsing responses, handling timeouts, and logging results into a report or CI dashboard.
Practical Scenarios
- 5
A test that passed yesterday now fails intermittently on the same hardware. How do you debug it?
Suggest checking for race conditions, timing issues, environmental changes, or hardware flakiness. Recommend adding logging, running the test in isolation, and using a debugger or trace tool.
- 6
You need to test a new sensor driver but the hardware is not available yet. What do you do?
Propose creating a mock or stub that simulates sensor responses, writing unit tests against that interface, and later running integration tests when hardware arrives.
- 7
How would you design a test suite for a bootloader that must work across multiple microcontroller families?
Discuss parameterizing tests by target, using a common abstraction layer, automating flashing and reset, and verifying fallback and recovery paths.
- 8
Your automated tests take too long and slow down the CI pipeline. How do you optimise them?
Mention parallelising tests, categorising into smoke and regression suites, running hardware-in-loop tests less frequently, and using faster simulators for early feedback.
Coding and Problem Solving
- 9
Write a function in C to reverse a linked list and explain how you would test it.
Provide correct pointer manipulation and edge cases (empty list, single node). For testing, mention unit tests with assert statements and boundary conditions.
- 10
Given an array of integers, find the pair that sums to a target value. How would you test your solution?
Discuss hash map or two-pointer approach. Testing should cover no pair, multiple pairs, negative numbers, and large inputs.
- 11
How do you test a function that reads a register value from hardware?
Explain abstracting the register access behind a function pointer or macro so it can be mocked. Test read, write, and error conditions without real hardware.
- 12
Write a Python script to parse a log file and count occurrences of each error code.
Show use of dictionaries, file reading, and regular expressions. Mention handling malformed lines and writing unit tests for the parser.
Behavioural and HR
- 13
Tell me about a time you found a bug that others missed. How did you handle it?
Use STAR format: describe the situation, your systematic approach to finding the bug, how you reported it with evidence, and the positive outcome.
- 14
Why do you want to work as an SDET in the semiconductor industry rather than a pure software role?
Show interest in hardware-software interaction, automation, and quality. Relate to your projects or coursework in embedded systems or microcontrollers.
- 15
Describe a situation where you had to learn a new tool or technology quickly for a project.
Highlight self-learning, resourcefulness, and applying the new skill to deliver results. Mention specific tools like Git, pytest, or a debugger.
- 16
How do you handle disagreements with a developer about whether a failure is a bug or a test issue?
Emphasise data-driven discussion, reproducing the issue, checking logs, and collaborating to find root cause without blaming.
Coding round
SDET interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.
Ready to try it for real?
Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.
This is practice material for SDET roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Renesas India or any other company has asked.
