What the job involves

Backend engineers in global tech companies build and maintain the server-side systems that power products used by millions. Day to day, you will write APIs, design data models, optimise database queries, and ensure services are reliable and scalable. You will also debug production issues, collaborate with frontend and DevOps teams, and participate in code reviews.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases, and when would you choose one over the other for a backend service?

Explain schema flexibility, scaling (vertical vs horizontal), consistency models, and give examples like user profiles (SQL) vs real-time logs (NoSQL).

  2. 2

Explain how a REST API works and what HTTP status codes you would use for success, client error, and server error.

Cover request-response cycle, statelessness, and specific codes like 200, 201, 400, 404, 500 with brief use cases.

  3. 3

What is a load balancer and why is it important in a backend architecture?

Describe distribution of traffic, health checks, and how it improves availability and scalability.

  4. 4

How would you design a URL shortener like bit.ly? Focus on database schema and API endpoints.

Mention hashing or base62 encoding, key-value store for mappings, and endpoints for shortening and redirecting.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

You notice a sudden spike in response time for a critical API. How would you debug and resolve it?

Outline checking logs, monitoring tools, database slow queries, recent deployments, and scaling resources if needed.

  2. 6

How would you handle a situation where two users try to book the same resource (e.g., a seat) at the same time?

Discuss locking mechanisms, transactions, or optimistic concurrency control to prevent race conditions.

  3. 7

You need to add a new feature that requires changing an existing database table with millions of rows. How do you approach it?

Talk about migrations, backward compatibility, testing on staging, and possibly using a phased rollout.

  4. 8

A colleague's code review points out that your function has a potential security flaw (e.g., SQL injection). How do you respond?

Show willingness to learn, explain how you would fix it (e.g., parameterized queries), and thank them for the feedback.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to complete a project. What was your role?

Use STAR method: describe situation, task, action, and result, highlighting collaboration and your contribution.

  2. 10

Why do you want to work as a backend engineer, and why our company?

Connect your interest in server-side logic and scalability to the company's products and engineering culture.

  3. 11

Describe a challenging technical problem you faced and how you solved it.

Pick a specific example, explain your thought process, and emphasise persistence and learning.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in the next three years?

Show ambition to grow technically, take ownership, and contribute to larger projects, aligning with company goals.

Problem Solving and Coding

  1. 13

Given an array of integers, find two numbers that add up to a target sum. How would you optimise it?

Start with brute force O(n^2), then use hash map for O(n) time, explaining trade-offs.

  2. 14

Write a function to check if a string is a palindrome, considering only alphanumeric characters and ignoring case.

Use two pointers from start and end, skip non-alphanumeric, compare lowercase characters.

  3. 15

How would you find the middle element of a linked list in one pass?

Use slow and fast pointer technique, where fast moves twice as fast as slow.

  4. 16

Explain how you would implement a stack that supports push, pop, and retrieving the minimum element in O(1) time.

Use an auxiliary stack to keep track of minimums, or store pairs of (value, current min).

Coding round

Backend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Backend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions RingCentral India or any other company has asked.
