What the job involves

A Test Engineer in Indian IT services validates software by executing test cases, logging defects, and verifying fixes before release. Freshers often do manual testing on web or mobile apps and write basic automation scripts under senior guidance. The role demands attention to detail and clear communication with developers and clients.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between verification and validation in software testing?

Verification checks if we are building the product right (reviews, walkthroughs), while validation checks if we built the right product (actual execution). Give a simple example like reviewing a requirement vs testing the built feature.

  2. 2

Explain the defect life cycle with an example.

Cover states: New, Assigned, Open, Fixed, Retest, Closed, Reopen, Rejected, Deferred. Use a real bug example like a login button not working on a specific browser.

  3. 3

What are boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning? How do you use them?

Define both techniques and show how you would apply them to a field accepting age 18 to 60. Mention that these reduce the number of test cases while covering valid and invalid ranges.

  4. 4

How do you write a good bug report? What fields do you include?

Include bug ID, title, steps to reproduce, expected vs actual result, severity, priority, environment, and attachments. Emphasise that a developer should be able to reproduce it without asking questions.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

You are testing a login page. What test cases will you write?

Cover valid login, invalid password, blank fields, SQL injection attempts, password masking, forgot password link, account lock after multiple failures, and session timeout. Show structured thinking.

  2. 6

A developer says your bug is not reproducible. What do you do?

Provide exact environment details, steps, screenshots, and logs. Try to reproduce on a different machine or build. If still not reproducible, mark it as 'Not Reproducible' with evidence and move on.

  3. 7

How would you test an e-commerce checkout flow?

Break it into cart, address, payment, and order confirmation. Test valid and invalid cards, empty cart, out-of-stock items, coupon codes, and order summary. Mention regression testing after any fix.

  4. 8

You have to test a mobile app with limited time. How do you prioritise?

Focus on critical user journeys first (login, core feature, payment). Use risk-based testing and smoke tests. Mention that you would run regression on high-impact areas and defer low-priority cosmetic tests.

Automation and Tools

  1. 9

What is the difference between manual and automation testing? When do you choose one over the other?

Manual is good for exploratory, usability, and one-time tests. Automation is for repetitive regression, large data sets, and performance. Mention that automation does not replace manual testing completely.

  2. 10

Write a simple Selenium script to open a browser and check the page title.

Show basic WebDriver setup, get() method, getTitle(), and a simple assertion. Mention that you would use TestNG or JUnit for assertions and reporting.

  3. 11

How do you test a REST API using Postman?

Cover creating a request, setting method and URL, adding headers and body, checking status codes, response time, and validating JSON schema. Mention using environment variables and collections.

  4. 12

What SQL queries would you use to validate data after a test?

Show SELECT with WHERE, JOIN between two tables, COUNT, and GROUP BY. Explain how you would verify that a new user record appears in the database after registration.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 13

Tell me about a time you found a mistake that others missed. How did you handle it?

Use the STAR method. Focus on how you noticed the issue, verified it, and communicated it without blaming anyone. Show attention to detail.

  2. 14

Why do you want to work as a Test Engineer in an IT services company?

Mention interest in quality, structured processes, and exposure to multiple domains and clients. Show that you understand the service model and are open to learning new tools.

  3. 15

Are you willing to relocate or work in shifts?

Be honest but positive. If you are flexible, say yes and explain that you see it as a learning opportunity. If not, state your constraint clearly and professionally.

  4. 16

Where do you see yourself in three years?

Show a path from manual tester to automation or test lead. Mention learning Selenium, API testing, and CI/CD tools. Avoid saying you want to move to development immediately.

Coding round

Test Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Test Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Softcell Technologies or any other company has asked.
