What the job involves

Systems Engineers in Indian IT services design, build, and maintain the software systems and infrastructure that power client applications. They work across the stack, from writing code and automating deployments to monitoring production and troubleshooting issues. Day to day involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, writing clean code, and ensuring systems are reliable, scalable, and secure.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What is the difference between a process and a thread, and how does this affect system performance?

Explain that processes have separate memory spaces while threads share memory within a process. Discuss how threads enable concurrency but require synchronization, impacting performance and resource usage.

  2. 2

How would you design a URL shortening service like bit.ly?

Cover requirements like generating unique short keys, storing mappings in a database, handling redirection, and scaling with caching and load balancers. Mention hash functions and collision handling.

  3. 3

Explain the CAP theorem and its implications for distributed databases.

Define consistency, availability, and partition tolerance, and state that only two can be fully guaranteed. Give examples like MongoDB (CP) and Cassandra (AP) and discuss trade-offs in real systems.

  4. 4

What happens when you type a URL into a browser and press Enter?

Walk through DNS resolution, TCP handshake, HTTP request/response, and rendering. Highlight caching, load balancing, and server-side processing to show depth.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

A client reports that their application is slow during peak hours. How would you diagnose and fix the issue?

Outline a systematic approach: check server metrics (CPU, memory, I/O), database query performance, network latency, and application logs. Suggest optimizations like caching, indexing, or horizontal scaling.

  2. 6

You need to deploy a new version of a service with zero downtime. How would you approach it?

Describe blue-green deployment or rolling updates, using load balancers to shift traffic gradually. Mention health checks, rollback plans, and automation with CI/CD pipelines.

  3. 7

How would you secure a REST API that is exposed to the internet?

Cover authentication (OAuth, JWT), authorization, HTTPS, rate limiting, input validation, and logging. Discuss OWASP API security top 10 and regular security audits.

  4. 8

You are asked to migrate an on-premise application to the cloud. What factors would you consider?

Discuss cost, scalability, security, compliance, and downtime. Compare lift-and-shift vs re-architecting, and mention cloud services like EC2, S3, and RDS.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to solve a challenging problem.

Use the STAR method: describe the situation, your task, actions you took, and the result. Emphasize collaboration, communication, and your specific contribution.

  2. 10

Why do you want to join a services company like ThoughtWorks India rather than a product company?

Highlight exposure to diverse clients, technologies, and domains. Mention the opportunity to learn quickly, work on real-world problems, and grow through varied projects.

  3. 11

Describe a situation where you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project.

Show your learning process: identifying resources, hands-on practice, and applying it. Emphasize adaptability and time management.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Align your goals with the company's growth path, such as becoming a technical lead or specializing in a domain. Show commitment to continuous learning and contributing to the organization.

Problem Solving and Coding

  1. 13

Write a function to detect if a linked list has a cycle.

Explain Floyd's cycle-finding algorithm (tortoise and hare) with O(n) time and O(1) space. Discuss edge cases like empty list and single node.

  2. 14

Given an array of integers, find two numbers that add up to a target sum.

Describe the hash map approach for O(n) time. Mention brute force as a baseline and discuss handling duplicates and returning indices vs values.

  3. 15

How would you reverse a string in place?

Use two pointers from start and end, swapping characters until they meet. Discuss time and space complexity, and handle Unicode or edge cases if relevant.

  4. 16

Explain how you would implement a LRU cache.

Combine a hash map for O(1) access and a doubly linked list for order. Describe get and put operations, eviction policy, and thread safety if needed.

Coding round

Systems Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Systems Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions ThoughtWorks India or any other company has asked.
