What the job involves

Backend engineers at fast-growing global tech companies build and maintain the server-side logic, APIs, and data pipelines that power products. They work with languages like Python or Go, design RESTful services, manage databases, and ensure systems scale securely for global users. Day to day involves writing code, reviewing pull requests, debugging production issues, and collaborating with frontend and product teams.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What happens when you type a URL into a browser and press Enter, from a backend perspective?

Cover DNS resolution, TCP handshake, HTTP request, server-side routing, database query, and response rendering. Mention caching and load balancers if possible.

  2. 2

Explain the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases. When would you choose one over the other for a user authentication service?

Discuss schema flexibility, scalability, and consistency. For authentication, SQL is often preferred for ACID compliance and relational integrity.

  3. 3

How would you design a REST API for a simple blog with users, posts, and comments?

Outline resource endpoints (e.g., /users, /posts, /comments), HTTP methods, status codes, and pagination. Mention authentication and versioning.

  4. 4

What is the difference between a process and a thread? How does it affect a backend server handling multiple requests?

Explain memory isolation, context switching, and concurrency. Relate to thread pools or event loops in servers like Node.js or Gunicorn.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

Your API is suddenly returning 500 errors for many users. How do you debug and resolve the issue?

Describe checking logs, monitoring dashboards, recent deployments, and database connections. Mention rollback and communication with the team.

  2. 6

You need to add a new feature that requires storing user activity logs. How would you approach the database schema and ensure it does not slow down the main application?

Consider a separate logging database or table, asynchronous writes, indexing, and retention policies. Mention avoiding synchronous writes on the critical path.

  3. 7

A colleague's code review points out that your function is too slow for large inputs. How do you optimize it?

Discuss profiling, algorithmic complexity, caching, and database query optimization. Show willingness to learn and iterate.

  4. 8

How would you handle sensitive user data like passwords and API keys in your backend service?

Mention hashing with salt (bcrypt, Argon2), environment variables, secret managers, and encryption at rest and in transit.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to complete a project. What was your role and how did you handle disagreements?

Use STAR method. Highlight communication, compromise, and focus on project success. Avoid blaming others.

  2. 10

Why do you want to work as a backend engineer at a fast-growing global tech company?

Show interest in scalability, global impact, and learning opportunities. Connect your skills to the company's domain like security or AI.

  3. 11

Describe a challenging technical problem you solved. What was your approach and what did you learn?

Pick a project or internship story. Explain the problem, your steps, the outcome, and a specific lesson learned.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in three years, and how does this role fit your career goals?

Express desire to grow into a senior engineer or specialize in distributed systems. Align with the company's growth and learning culture.

Coding and Problem Solving

  1. 13

Given an array of integers, find two numbers that add up to a target sum. Write code and explain time complexity.

Use a hash map for O(n) solution. Discuss edge cases like duplicates and no solution. Write clean code with comments.

  2. 14

How would you reverse a linked list iteratively and recursively? What are the trade-offs?

Show both implementations. Discuss space complexity (O(1) vs O(n)) and stack overflow risk for recursion on large lists.

  3. 15

Write a function to check if a string is a valid palindrome, ignoring non-alphanumeric characters and case.

Use two pointers or filter and reverse. Mention handling Unicode and efficiency. Test with examples like 'A man, a plan, a canal: Panama'.

  4. 16

Explain how you would find the first non-repeating character in a string. What data structure would you use?

Use a hash map to count frequencies, then iterate to find first with count 1. Discuss O(n) time and O(1) space for fixed alphabet.

Coding round

Backend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Backend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Vectra AI India or any other company has asked.
