What the job involves

Data Scientists in AI and deeptech companies build, evaluate, and deploy machine learning models that power products, often working with large language models, recommendation systems, or computer vision. Day to day, they clean and analyze data, run experiments, measure model performance, and collaborate with engineers and product teams to ship AI features. In a company like Anthropic India, the focus is on safe, scalable AI, so you may also work on evaluation, alignment, and responsible AI practices.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Give an example of each in an AI product context.

A strong answer clearly defines each type and links to real applications like classification for spam detection, clustering for customer segmentation, and reinforcement learning for robotics or game playing.

  2. 2

What is a transformer architecture, and why has it become dominant in natural language processing?

Cover self-attention, parallel processing, and scalability. Mention how transformers handle long-range dependencies better than RNNs and enable models like BERT and GPT.

  3. 3

How do you handle missing or imbalanced data in a dataset for a classification problem?

Discuss imputation techniques, resampling methods like SMOTE, and using appropriate evaluation metrics like precision-recall instead of accuracy.

  4. 4

Describe how you would evaluate a large language model for a customer support chatbot. What metrics would you use?

Mention both automated metrics like BLEU, ROUGE, perplexity, and human evaluation for relevance, coherence, and safety. Also talk about A/B testing with user satisfaction scores.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

You are given a dataset of user interactions with an AI feature. How would you determine if the feature is improving user engagement?

Outline steps: define engagement metrics, set up a control and test group, run an A/B test, check statistical significance, and analyze segment-level differences.

  2. 6

Suppose your model's performance drops in production after a few weeks. What could be the reasons and how would you debug it?

Discuss data drift, concept drift, pipeline errors, and changes in user behavior. Suggest monitoring, retraining, and validating data quality.

  3. 7

You need to build a model to classify support tickets into categories. Walk me through your approach from data collection to deployment.

Cover problem definition, data collection and labeling, preprocessing, model selection, training, evaluation, and deployment with monitoring. Mention handling class imbalance and interpretability.

  4. 8

How would you explain a complex model's prediction to a non-technical stakeholder?

Use simple language, avoid jargon, and focus on feature importance and business impact. Mention tools like SHAP or LIME for local explanations.

Coding and Data Manipulation

  1. 9

Write a Python function to calculate the F1 score given true labels and predicted labels.

Show understanding of precision, recall, and harmonic mean. Handle edge cases like zero division. Use numpy or basic Python.

  2. 10

Given a SQL table of user events, write a query to find the top 5 most active users in the last 30 days.

Use GROUP BY, COUNT, and ORDER BY with LIMIT. Filter by date using WHERE or HAVING. Ensure correct handling of timestamps.

  3. 11

How would you use pandas to merge two dataframes and handle duplicate keys?

Explain merge types (inner, outer, left, right), and how to use validate parameter or drop_duplicates. Mention checking for unexpected row counts.

  4. 12

Implement a simple linear regression using gradient descent in Python.

Show initialization of weights, cost function, gradient computation, and iterative updates. Mention learning rate and convergence.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 13

Why do you want to work in AI and deeptech, and specifically in a data science role?

Show passion for AI's potential, mention specific projects or courses, and align with the company's mission like safe AI development.

  2. 14

Describe a time you worked on a team project. What was your role and how did you handle disagreements?

Use STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Highlight collaboration, communication, and conflict resolution.

  3. 15

Tell me about a challenging technical problem you solved. How did you approach it?

Focus on the problem, your thought process, steps taken, and the outcome. Show persistence and learning from failure.

  4. 16

Where do you see yourself in five years in the AI field?

Express growth in technical depth and leadership, and interest in contributing to impactful AI solutions. Avoid vague answers.

Coding round

Data Scientist interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Data Scientist roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Anthropic India or any other company has asked.
