What the job involves

As a Data Scientist at an AI and deeptech company like Vernacular AI Labs, you will build and deploy machine learning models that process real-world data, with a focus on speech, text, or multimodal inputs for Indian languages and low-resource settings. Day to day, you will clean and explore datasets, train and evaluate models, run experiments, and work with engineers to ship models into products. You will also communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders and iterate based on user feedback.

Role and technical knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Give an example of each in the context of vernacular AI.

Strong answers define each paradigm clearly and connect examples to real use cases like language identification (supervised), clustering dialects (unsupervised), and dialogue systems (reinforcement).

  2. 2

How would you handle missing data in a dataset of Indian language text transcripts?

Discuss imputation, deletion, or model-based methods, and mention the importance of understanding why data is missing, especially for low-resource languages.

  3. 3

What is the bias-variance tradeoff? How do you detect and address overfitting in a deep learning model for speech recognition?

Explain the tradeoff, then mention techniques like regularization, dropout, early stopping, and cross-validation, with specific reference to speech data.

  4. 4

Describe how you would evaluate a machine translation model for an Indian language pair like Hindi to Tamil.

Cover metrics like BLEU, METEOR, or chrF, and discuss the need for human evaluation due to cultural nuances and dialect variations.

Practical scenarios

  1. 5

You are given a dataset of 10,000 audio clips in 5 Indian languages, but the labels are noisy. How would you proceed to build a language identification model?

Outline steps: data cleaning, label verification, using semi-supervised learning or noise-robust loss functions, and iterating with a small clean validation set.

  2. 6

Your model performs well on test data but fails in production for users with strong regional accents. What do you do?

Suggest collecting more diverse data, fine-tuning on accented speech, and monitoring production performance to identify drift.

  3. 7

How would you design an experiment to test if a new feature improves user engagement for a voice-based assistant?

Mention A/B testing, defining success metrics, ensuring statistical power, and considering ethical and privacy concerns.

  4. 8

You need to deploy a model on a low-end smartphone with limited memory. What optimizations would you consider?

Discuss model quantization, pruning, knowledge distillation, and using lightweight architectures like MobileNet or TinyML.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Why do you want to work at a smaller AI and deeptech company like Vernacular AI Labs instead of a large tech firm?

Show enthusiasm for hands-on impact, learning across the stack, and contributing to a mission that solves unique problems for Indian users.

  2. 10

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new tool or technique quickly for a project. How did you approach it?

Use the STAR method: describe the situation, the tool (e.g., a new NLP library), your learning process, and the outcome.

  3. 11

Describe a situation where you disagreed with a teammate on a technical approach. How did you resolve it?

Highlight communication, data-driven discussion, and willingness to compromise or test both approaches.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in 3 years, and how does this role fit into your career goals?

Align your growth with the company's needs, such as becoming a specialist in speech or NLP for Indian languages, and show commitment to learning.

Coding and problem solving

  1. 13

Write a Python function to calculate the cosine similarity between two vectors without using external libraries.

Demonstrate understanding of dot product and norms, and handle edge cases like zero vectors.

  2. 14

Given a list of words, write a function to group anagrams together. How would you optimize it?

Use a dictionary with sorted word as key, and discuss time complexity; mention alternative approaches like counting characters.

  3. 15

How would you find the top 10 most frequent words in a large text file that does not fit in memory?

Discuss streaming, chunking, using a hash map or Count-Min Sketch, and external sorting if needed.

  4. 16

Implement a simple linear regression using gradient descent in Python. Explain your choice of learning rate.

Show code for updating weights, and explain how learning rate affects convergence, with mention of tuning methods.

Coding round

Data Scientist interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.
