What the job involves

As a backend engineer in neobanking, lending, or insurtech, you will build and maintain the server-side systems that power digital banking, loan processing, and insurance products. Day to day, you will design APIs, integrate with payment gateways and credit bureaus, ensure transaction security and data privacy, and optimize systems for high-volume, low-latency financial operations. You will work closely with product, compliance, and frontend teams to deliver reliable and scalable financial solutions.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

How would you design a REST API for a loan application system that handles user details, credit checks, and approval status?

Outline endpoints for user registration, loan application submission, status retrieval, and admin approval. Mention authentication, input validation, and error handling.

  2. 2

Explain how you would ensure data consistency when a user transfers money between accounts in a neobanking app.

Discuss ACID transactions, database locking, idempotency keys, and using a ledger system to prevent double-spending.

  3. 3

What are the key security considerations when integrating a payment gateway like Razorpay or UPI into a lending platform?

Cover PCI DSS compliance, tokenization, HTTPS, webhook signature verification, and secure storage of API keys.

  4. 4

How would you handle sensitive customer data like Aadhaar or PAN in your backend systems to comply with Indian regulations?

Mention encryption at rest and in transit, masking in logs, access controls, and adherence to RBI guidelines and data localization.

Practical Scenarios

  1. 5

Your loan processing system is experiencing high latency during peak hours. How would you diagnose and fix the issue?

Suggest profiling, checking database query performance, adding caching (Redis), scaling horizontally, and optimizing code.

  2. 6

A bug causes duplicate loan disbursements to some users. How would you handle the immediate fallout and prevent future occurrences?

Immediate: stop disbursements, reconcile transactions, refund duplicates. Prevention: implement idempotency, add database constraints, and improve testing.

  3. 7

You need to integrate with a new credit bureau API that has rate limits and occasional downtime. How would you design your system to handle this?

Use asynchronous processing with a queue, implement retries with exponential backoff, cache responses, and have fallback mechanisms.

  4. 8

How would you approach migrating a monolithic lending application to a microservices architecture?

Discuss identifying bounded contexts, incremental migration, API gateways, service discovery, and maintaining data consistency.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Why do you want to work in the fintech sector, specifically in neobanking or lending?

Show passion for financial inclusion, technology-driven solutions, and awareness of challenges like regulatory compliance and scalability.

  2. 10

Describe a time when you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project. How did you approach it?

Use STAR method: situation, task, action (online courses, documentation, mentorship), and result (successful project delivery).

  3. 11

Tell me about a time you worked in a team to solve a complex problem. What was your role?

Highlight collaboration, communication, and your specific contribution. Emphasize listening to others and achieving a shared goal.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in the next two years in terms of technical and career growth?

Align with the company's growth: deepening backend expertise, taking ownership of critical modules, and contributing to scalable fintech solutions.

Coding round

Backend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Backend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Freo or any other company has asked.
