What the job involves

Backend engineers in global tech build and maintain server-side systems that power web and mobile applications, APIs, and data processing pipelines. Day to day they write and review code, design database schemas, debug production issues, and collaborate with frontend, QA, and DevOps teams. In an established product company, much of the work involves extending existing services, improving reliability, and integrating with internal and third-party systems.

Role and Technical Knowledge

  1. 1

What happens when you type a URL into a browser and hit enter, from the backend perspective?

Cover DNS resolution, TCP handshake, HTTP request, server-side routing, database or cache lookup, and response rendering. Show awareness of where backend services sit in the flow.

  2. 2

Explain the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases. When would you choose one over the other for a banking or financial application?

Discuss schema flexibility, ACID transactions, scaling models, and consistency needs. For financial data, emphasize strong consistency and relational integrity.

  3. 3

What is a REST API? How would you design an endpoint to fetch a user's recent transactions?

Mention resource naming, HTTP methods, status codes, pagination, and authentication. Give a concrete path like GET /users/{id}/transactions with query parameters.

  4. 4

What are indexes in a database? How do they improve performance, and what is the trade-off?

Explain how indexes speed up reads by reducing full table scans but add overhead on writes and consume storage. Mention composite and unique indexes.

Practical Scenarios and Problem Solving

  1. 5

A production API starts returning 500 errors after a deployment. How would you debug it?

Walk through checking logs, recent changes, error rates, rollback options, and reproducing the issue in a staging environment. Show a systematic approach.

  2. 6

You need to store and retrieve millions of records daily. How would you approach database design and query optimization?

Discuss indexing strategy, partitioning or sharding, caching, read replicas, and query analysis. Mention monitoring and iterative tuning.

  3. 7

How would you handle duplicate payment requests in a backend system?

Talk about idempotency keys, unique constraints, transaction isolation, and retry logic. Show awareness of financial correctness and race conditions.

  4. 8

Write a function to find the first non-repeating character in a string. What is its time and space complexity?

Use a hash map to count frequencies in one pass, then a second pass to find the first unique character. State O(n) time and O(k) space clearly.

Behavioural and Situational Questions

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project or hackathon.

Use the STAR format. Focus on how you identified resources, managed time, and applied the learning to deliver a working result.

  2. 10

Describe a situation where you disagreed with a teammate on a technical approach. How did you handle it?

Show respect, data-driven reasoning, and willingness to compromise. Emphasize the outcome and what you learned about collaboration.

  3. 11

Give an example of a bug you fixed that had a significant impact. What was your process?

Explain how you isolated the issue, the tools you used, the fix, and how you prevented recurrence. Highlight ownership and attention to detail.

  4. 12

How do you prioritize tasks when you have multiple deadlines in a short time?

Mention urgency versus importance, communication with stakeholders, breaking work into smaller chunks, and tracking progress. Give a real example if possible.

HR and Fresher-Specific Questions

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a backend engineer in a product-based company?

Connect your interest in scalable systems, problem-solving, and long-term product impact. Avoid generic answers about 'good company culture' alone.

  2. 14

Where do you see yourself in three years as a backend developer?

Show realistic growth: deeper technical expertise, ownership of modules, and contribution to design decisions. Align with continuous learning.

  3. 15

Are you comfortable working with legacy code or maintaining existing systems?

Be honest and positive. Mention that understanding existing codebases builds strong fundamentals and that you enjoy improving reliability.

  4. 16

What are your salary expectations as a fresher?

Research typical ranges for the role and city. Give a flexible range and express openness to the company's standard fresher package and growth opportunities.

Coding round

Backend Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

Ready to try it for real?

Take a timed test or talk through a mock interview for this role, then see your scores.

This is practice material for Backend Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Jack Henry India or any other company has asked.
