What the job involves

A data scientist in AI and deeptech builds and deploys machine learning models that turn text, speech, and user data into product features such as chatbots, document understanding, and recommendation engines. Day to day you clean data, train and evaluate models, run experiments, and work with engineers to ship models into production. At fast-growing companies you often own the full cycle from problem framing to monitoring live performance.

Role and technical knowledge

  1. 1

Explain the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning with an example from a conversational AI product.

A strong answer defines labels clearly and gives a concrete example like intent classification (supervised) versus clustering user queries (unsupervised).

  2. 2

How would you handle class imbalance in a dataset of customer support tickets?

Mention resampling, class weights, and appropriate metrics like F1 or AUC instead of accuracy, and explain why each helps.

  3. 3

What is the bias-variance tradeoff and how does it affect model choice for a small startup dataset?

Define both terms, connect to overfitting and underfitting, and suggest regularisation or simpler models when data is limited.

  4. 4

Describe how a transformer model works at a high level and why it is useful for NLP tasks.

Cover attention, parallel processing, and pretraining; avoid deep math but show you understand why it beats RNNs for long text.

Practical scenarios

  1. 5

You are given a dataset of user queries and asked to build an intent classifier for a chatbot. Walk through your approach.

Cover data cleaning, label inspection, train-validation split, baseline model, evaluation, error analysis, and iteration.

  2. 6

Your model performs well offline but poorly in production. What could be wrong and how do you debug it?

Discuss data drift, leakage, differences in preprocessing, latency constraints, and monitoring live metrics.

  3. 7

How would you measure the success of a document summarisation feature for an enterprise client?

Combine automatic metrics like ROUGE with human evaluation and business metrics such as time saved or user satisfaction.

  4. 8

You have to explain a complex model's prediction to a non-technical stakeholder. How do you do it?

Mention feature importance, SHAP values, and simple visual explanations, and stress clear language without jargon.

Behavioural and HR

  1. 9

Tell me about a time you worked on a team project and faced a disagreement. How did you resolve it?

Use the STAR method, focus on listening and data-driven resolution, and end with a positive outcome.

  2. 10

Why do you want to work at a fast-growing AI company rather than a large established firm?

Show enthusiasm for ownership, rapid learning, and direct impact; connect to your own career goals without criticising big companies.

  3. 11

Describe a situation where you had to learn a new tool or concept quickly for a project.

Pick a concrete example, explain your learning process, and highlight the result and what you would do differently.

  4. 12

Where do you see yourself in three years in the field of data science?

Show realistic growth, such as deepening technical skills or leading small projects, and align it with the company's domain.

Domain and product sense

  1. 13

How would you improve a virtual assistant that users find unhelpful for complex queries?

Suggest better intent detection, fallback handling, human handoff, and continuous learning from user feedback.

  2. 14

What are the ethical concerns of using AI for customer interactions, and how would you address them?

Discuss bias, privacy, transparency, and consent, and propose practical steps like audits and clear disclosure.

  3. 15

If you had to choose between a simpler model with 85 percent accuracy and a complex model with 90 percent accuracy, what would you consider?

Weigh interpretability, latency, maintenance cost, and business needs; show you do not chase accuracy blindly.

Coding round

Data Scientist interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.
