What the job involves

Test Engineers in Indian IT services validate software against requirements by designing and executing test cases, logging defects, and supporting regression cycles. They work with developers, business analysts, and QA leads across Agile or waterfall projects, often for client accounts. Freshers start with manual testing, basic SQL, and test management tools, then move toward automation and domain-specific testing.

Role and Testing Fundamentals

  1. 1

What is the difference between verification and validation in software testing?

Explain that verification checks whether the product is built correctly against specifications, while validation checks whether the correct product is built to meet user needs. Give one example each, such as review of requirements versus actual user testing.

  2. 2

Walk me through the Software Testing Life Cycle phases you would follow for a new module.

Cover requirement analysis, test planning, test case design, environment setup, test execution, defect logging, regression, and closure. Mention entry and exit criteria for at least two phases.

  3. 3

What is the difference between severity and priority in a defect? Give an example where they differ.

Severity is technical impact, priority is business urgency. A strong example is a spelling mistake on the home page: low severity, high priority. Or a crash in a rarely used report: high severity, low priority.

  4. 4

How would you test a login page for an Indian banking application?

Cover valid and invalid credentials, password masking, account lockout, SQL injection, session timeout, CAPTCHA, and mobile responsiveness. Mention checking Aadhaar or PAN based login if relevant, and error messages that do not reveal which field is wrong.

Technical Skills and Tools

  1. 5

Write a SQL query to find duplicate email addresses in a user table.

Use GROUP BY on email with HAVING COUNT(*) > 1. Be ready to explain how you would then delete duplicates while keeping one record, using ROW_NUMBER or a self-join.

  2. 6

What are the different types of joins in SQL, and when would you use a LEFT JOIN during testing?

Explain INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, and FULL OUTER joins. For testing, a LEFT JOIN helps verify that parent records without child records are still returned, which is useful for orphan data checks.

  3. 7

How do you test a REST API using Postman? What do you check in the response?

Mention setting the HTTP method, URL, headers, and body. Check status codes, response time, JSON schema, data types, error messages, and authentication tokens. Also mention negative testing with missing or invalid parameters.

  4. 8

What is the difference between smoke testing and sanity testing?

Smoke testing is a broad, shallow check on a new build to decide whether to proceed with detailed testing. Sanity testing is a narrow, deep check on a specific fix or feature after a minor change.

Practical Scenarios and Problem Solving

  1. 9

You find a critical bug one day before release. What do you do?

Show a structured approach: confirm and document the defect with steps and evidence, assess impact with the lead, communicate risk to stakeholders, and propose options such as a hotfix, workaround, or deferred release. Avoid saying you would simply stop the release.

  2. 10

A developer says your bug is not reproducible. How do you handle it?

Explain that you would re-check your environment, provide exact steps, screenshots, logs, and test data, and try to reproduce on a clean build. If still not reproducible, involve the lead and mark it as not reproducible with evidence for future reference.

  3. 11

How would you decide what to include in a regression suite for a monthly release?

Prioritise high-risk, high-usage, and recently changed modules. Include critical business flows, previously failed test cases, and integration points. Mention that you would review and update the suite based on defect trends and time available.

  4. 12

You have to test a feature but requirements are unclear. What do you do?

Say you would list assumptions, ask the business analyst or product owner for clarification, check existing documentation or similar features, and document open questions. Proceed with risk-based testing on clear areas while waiting for answers.

Behavioural and HR Questions for Freshers

  1. 13

Why do you want to work as a Test Engineer in an IT services company rather than a product company?

Show awareness of service-based work: multiple clients, domains, and structured processes. Mention exposure to different technologies, client communication, and the chance to learn end-to-end delivery. Avoid saying product companies are boring.

  2. 14

Are you comfortable with relocation, rotational shifts, or a service agreement or bond?

Answer honestly and clearly. If you agree, state your flexibility and willingness to learn. If you have constraints, mention them politely with a reason. Companies like Unisys India often support global clients, so shift readiness matters.

  3. 15

Tell me about a time you found a mistake in your own work and corrected it.

Use a simple STAR structure: situation, task, action, result. Pick an academic or project example where you reviewed your work, found an error, fixed it, and learned to double-check. Show ownership without blaming others.

  4. 16

Where do you see yourself in three years as a Test Engineer?

Show a realistic path: strong manual testing foundation, then automation skills such as Selenium or API testing, and possibly domain expertise or test lead responsibilities. Tie it to continuous learning and adding value to projects.

Coding round

Test Engineer interviews usually include a coding round. Practise planning the solution out loud, then review code the AI writes from your plan, in Python, Java, C++, C or JavaScript.

This is practice material for Test Engineer roles, written with AI. It is not a list of questions Unisys India or any other company has asked.
